When you join Bikram Yoga Darlinghurst, you're not just signing up for yoga classes. You're becoming part of a community that's been growing since 2002. One student described it as "hugely healing and a very important and non judgemental community for me." We've never found a better sentence for what we're trying to build. This article celebrates what makes our Darlo community special and how you become part of it.
Who actually fills the room
Our students range from young professionals to retirees, from complete beginners to teachers in training. They come from all over — Surry Hills and Paddington on foot, Potts Point and Bondi by car, and a few diehards from the inner west who refuse to call anywhere else home. What they have in common is commitment to their practice and respect for the shared space we've created together.
Katie and Marty
Two lines from our student survey about the owners: "genuine people with a strong sense of connection" and "owners encouraging and friendly". That's Katie and Marty.
The traditions
The Mardi Gras class is the big one. As we wrote in 2018: "This year is a historical year for the LGBT community and we are in full support of our LGBT students. Wear whatever you like, as long as you can practice the postures and have a great time."
The quiet bonds
This community is what makes the challenging days easier. When you don't feel like coming to class, you come anyway because you know your regular spot-mates will notice if you're gone. When you're struggling in a posture, you draw strength from practising alongside others.
Oxford Street is part of it
A lot of our discovery stories start on the footpath. "Saw the signage from Oxford St," one survey answer reads. Another: "I walked in… I was hooked. The rest is history."
What students asked us for next
One survey answer asked us to "organise some meetups so I can get to know some of the members better."
Fair call.
